Title: What is It?
Post by: lzenglish on May 12, 2011, 05:17:11 PM
I googled this to death, and came up empty. But, considering where I got it, and a close look at it, I think I have a good Idea what it is now. If it is what I think, it is missing a small part that attaches to the 2 threaded screw holes shown on it. I figured I would throw it to the members, to have a guess at it, as I could be wrong! So, What is it? Hint: I got it with my butchers tools I posted in the blacksmith discussion.

Edit: I should have said the round knurled piece with the arm, acts as an eccentric, and opens and closes down on the bed surface when moved back and forth.

Banding tool?

That was not my guess, but maybe? Notice the "Round" eye screw!

Does string go through the "round" eye screw?

I believe this is a Butchers String Dispenser, that is missing the cut-off blade, or knife. I could not find one on google, even armed with the name stamped on the thing "The Griffith Laborartories Chicago". But, they were in the food culinary buisness starting in 1919. And, the fact that it came from a deseased butchers estate sale, where he had it mounted on a bench in his shop leads me to think this. He had no string or twine in it when I bought it, but looking at how it is made, and operates, this is my best WAG.? Any other Ideas appreciated.

PS. I think he probably used it to hold wires while tinning or soldering them, since he restored old Automobiles. And Yes, I think string went thru the "Eye" Donny B.

Looks like The Griffith Laboratories Chicago is still in business. Maybe you could ask them what it is. They seem to specialize in spices and seasonings.
