A very large boiler was being transported to Texas City through Alvin, Texas Friday November 18, 2011. Hauling done by H Brown of Lafayette, Louisiana. Due to bridge clearances, the load had to pass through Alvin on Business 35, right through town.About 5 hours for just over a mile.
I followed them for an hour or so- 3 blocks!
I gave my card to the supervisor, and delivered the photos to the local newspaper. Perhaps they will at least give me a byline.

Nice shooting Papaw!  Doesn't look like there is any of the load on the pull tractor. They added ballast slabs for traction.

Great job Papaw. Great use of opportunity.  Did the paper run your photos with your byline?

Yes, they did- Front page in color, and 4 of them in a slideshow in the web edition.

Way To Go Papaw.  That just proves the old saying "the camera in the hand is worth two in the bush"  Stoney translation keep your camera with you.

I take a camera everywhere I go.
Last year we went to take daughter and her kids school shopping in my wife's Dodge Caliber. She came out with an extra kid that had to ride in a car seat. Not enough room, so I said I would just hang out, didn't want to go shopping anyway. I reached into the car and grabbed my camera, and the daughter said- "Pop, do you take that camera everywhere?"
While they were gone I found a white Hibiscus on her back fence. One of the shots has sold 5 wall hangers since then.

There you go.  My family expects me when they see me.  They know I'm likely to be parked on the side of the road taking photos.  Camera is always where I am.

Papaw, here is the photo gear that stays in my truck.

Empty space at the top is where the Nikon D2X w/ 28 to 80 lens that I shot this picture, the 2 camera bodies on the left side are a F5 and a F3 Nikon.  As a Consulting Arborist I have to shoot film in case a case ever comes to court.  Alabama will not accept digital images in court.  At the bottom is a D1X Nikon w/ 75 to 300 lens.  To the right of the D1x is a 500 F8 mirror lens.
I also carry a Slik 212 pistol grip tripod and a Brushawk shoulder stock.  Always ready.

Looks like my bag except for the Canon stuff in mine. The Manfrotti tripod wont fit in there, though!

My son, John and daughter-in-law, P.J. shoot Canon, My wife, KatBird shoots Minolta and I shoot Nikon.  That is the biggest bag that LowePro makes.  When I ordered it at Southerlands Camera, I was asked to make sure that that was what I wanted.  They said a small guy ordered one and when it came in, he loaded the bag and put the shoulder straps on and fell backwards then didn't want it.  It has two external bags.  One I use for a tool bag, red light, etc and the other is for cleaning gear.
