Title: 1970 Black & Decker Power Tools
Post by: BDFan1981 on October 25, 2012, 07:26:46 PM
Does anyone remember the complete listing of Black & Decker power tools from 1970? That year was transitional, since B&D adopted a new model numbering system. Certain power tools with the older model #s continued to be sold through December of that year, if the replacement was not a direct one that had retained the older design.

Here's a few B&D power tools with old and new numbers:
7010 - 1/4" Drill (previous model #: U100)
7050 - 1/4" Variable Speed Reversing Drill, Double Insulated (previous model #: U207-2)
7150 - 3/8" Variable Speed Reversing Drill, Double Insulated (previous model #: U222-2)
7260 - 1/2" Deluxe Reversing Spade Handle Drill (previous model #: U226-1)
7301 - 7-1/4" 1 HP Circular Saw (previous model #: U130)
7330 - 7-1/4" Deluxe Circular Saw (previous model #: U231)
7410 - Finishing Sander (previous model #: U140)
7420 - Deluxe Dual-Action Finishing Sander (previous model #: U240)
7450 - 3" x 24" L.C.G. (Low Center of Gravity) Belt Sander (previous model #: U144)
7460 - 3" x 24" L.C.G. (Low Center of Gravity) 2-Speed Commercial Duty Belt Sander (previous model #: U244)
7510 - Jig Saw (previous model #: U153)
7640 - Commercial Duty Router (previous model #: U367)

The practice even applied to their line of lawn-and-garden tools:
8015 - 18" Standard Dual-Blade Rotary Mower, Double Insulated (previous model #: U173)
8020 - 18" Deluxe Dual-Blade Rotary Mower, Double Insulated (previous model #: U273)
8040 - 22" Deluxe Dual-Blade Rotary Mower, Double Insulated (previous model #: U274)
8100 - 13" Single-Edge Hedge Trimmer (previous model #: U172)
8110 - 13" Dual-Edge Hedge Trimmer (previous model #: U175)
8120 - 16" Deluxe Dual-Edge Hedge Trimmer (previous model #: U272)
8140 - 22" Commercial Duty Dual-Edge Hedge Trimmer (previous model #: U372)
8180 - 12" Cordless Hedge Trimmer (previous model #: C671)
8210 - Lawn Trimmer-Edger (previous model #: U176)
8220 - Deluxe Lawn Edger-Trimmer (previous model #: U278)

New for 1970 (not carried over from 1969)
7370-10,7371-10,7372-10 - 6-1/2", 7-1/4" and 8-1/4" (respectively) Builders' SAWCAT Circular Saws (replaced previous all-aluminum U336,U337,U338 saws respectively) (equivalent 3-wire versions: 3015,3017,3019)
8000 - 18" Standard Single-Blade Rotary Mower, Double Insulated
8010 - 18" Deluxe Single-Blade Rotary Mower, Double Insulated
8080 - 18" Cordless Reel Mower

EDIT 11-7-2012: I've noticed B&D may have begun their new model numbering system in July 1969, since I've seen some newspaper ads from the last six months of that year that have the newer model numbers for those power tools.

Thank you for complimenting. I hope to obtain more data about it, though. I am currently compiling an MS Excel table of it.

EDIT: My 1973 B&D Power Tools & Accessories for Industry and the Construction Trades has a similar listing of tools with old and new model numbers.

Welcome & Aloha from Hawaii...

Great information, but I don't see my B&D electric Hammer on the list...
