Title: a couple of stupid questions probably
Post by: 1930 on July 19, 2011, 01:50:56 PM
These two wrenches showed up in a 28 Victory. I am certain that they are not original but is there anything about either of them ( besides being mangled ) that might help determine who did make them and when.

Got any marks on the back side of the headbolt/sparkplug wrench?

The lower wrench sure looks like a Model T sparkplug headnut wrench. That style of wrench was used starting about 1913 (on the Model T), I am sure many other cars used the same style wrench. The Model T wrench is marked Ford on one side and the part number T 5893 on the other. All the Model T wrenches I have seen like that are made by Moore Drop Forging  (M in a circle).

Thanks for the info, I dont know if its marked, trying to help a guy out while gathering some info myself. I doubt he will even care enough to look and see if the wrench is marked.
I assumed the dark portion was from heating and bending

Style issues would tent to agree they weren't toolkit tools, but presumably they were usefull to the car owner, which would imply they fit things on the car. The Ford wrench is easy, there is about an 80% chance it fits the head bolts. The other wrench is more of a puzzle, it's quite large, and there are not all that many bolts that large on a car. Plus it has been files to clear an obstruction....

I find myself wondering if model 8's had 1-1/8 wheel bearing nuts recessed in hubs.....

My Davis wrench's socket is at right angle to the open end, which is different from Overland and Simmons wrenches I have.
