Rescue B/D 8" Grinder!!!
« on: March 23, 2014, 08:47:26 PM »
A guy I know that is cleaning out his storage areas spent like $40 getting this 8" Vintage Black an Decker grider back to health and it still hums but won't start on its oown.  It may just need a capacitor, but I still marvel at how bullet proof these old grinders were.  The tool rests are every bit as thick as the old C-man Block Grinders and the Baldors.  I can't glean much info off that ID plate just yet, but will  try as time allows.  Also pcked up an old 1/4" Zephyr drill that has what appears to be a keyless chuck, but it's frozen up and likely not going to be salvagable.

Oh Man that is a fine grinder!
The capacitor is often in the base. Just replace it with the same rating. Its stamped on the side or the end.
You can get one for 4 dollars if you can walk into a Grainger store.
Don't try mail order though. They will charge you $10 shipping on a 4 dollar part.

Go to ebay if you need mail order.
Last one I got was about $5 including shipping.

Jet wanted 96 dollars,.............. as if!!

Wonder if it is old enough to be a flat can type? not the silver or gray ovals. More like a square sardine can! Areovox is one who made them.
A bunch of pics (5000+) of tools and projects in our shoppe

For the home shop I don't think theres any better grinders out there then those black an deckers or craftsman block grinders.

Baldors are nice but there all more then I want to spend, not to mention most are 220.

Try this 115V  Baldor if you're near Erie PA  Auction  #351030308339.   for $50, I'd be tempted.......

50 bucks isn't bad. It would be tempting if I was local.

I have no idea who made it but theres huge a grinder at school. Some parts look homemade while other parts don't. It has 8 stations with a grinding wheel and wire wheel at each station. Its all belt driven off one main motor. A foot pedal at each station engages those two wheels. Its got plenty of power, even when someone is at each station.

Nola:  Gotta have photos of such a Rube Goldberg contraption as that.  I have a really HD Stainless rool around table with 4 grinders mounted on it.  3 C-man box grinders(3 different HP) and a small 1/3 hp Baldor I paid $12 for.  When the snow clears, I'll get some photos of it......I promise.

I think ive caught myself several times looking at the thing. Everything else in the shop is all newer, except for this grinder thing. I considered taking a picture in the past. Our instructor freaks if we have our phone out in the shop. He doesn't care what you do in the classroom but in the shop he will kick kids right out for being on there phone in the shop.
