Clark Bars are Great
« on: July 26, 2014, 07:39:36 PM »

Got this box opener at auction tonight. Figured it wasn't an antique cause how old can a Clark Candy Bar be but it was stamped (Clark Bars are Great). I think I remember them from before WWII but that's not so long ago. Googled them and found that David L Clark started making them in 1866. Even I can't remember that. Box opener may have been made last week but I don't think so.
Gellman just came along because ringman wanted to hold up two things in each hand.

I've seen those before. 1920's at least. When a large order of candy bars were ordered a crate hammer came along, I think.

As much as I hate to take the discussion away from anything involving chocolate...
What about that Gellman adjustable wrench?  I recently picked up a 6 inch Gellman.  Nifty little thing.  I'd like to know more about it.

Don't know much. Israel C Gellman patented April 17,1923 according to Cope.

When I was a kit the bars had a thing on the back you mailed in to win a horse.
I have no idea what I would have done with a horse or where I would have put it, but I mailed in every one of them....
Just a weathered light rust/WD40 mix patina.

When I was little, Clark Bars were bigger!

While we are on crate hammers, I have a well beaten one marked BOX TERRIER on one side and there is a nearly worn-off logo on the reverse.

I think I have seen this logo, but can't recall what it was. Can anyone ID it from this poor photo??

The Box Terrier name belonged to Bridgeport Hardware Mfg co, but All I see in your logo pic is 2 curvy lines...(

(BHM had an overstamped B with a H in the top and M in the bottom logo)

Gellman "Polly" wrenches have been topic of past threads including an ad ( http://www.papawswrench.com/vboard/index.php?topic=6050 ) photo of three sizes in canvas holder ( http://www.papawswrench.com/vboard/index.php?topic=5273 ) and photo sets in DATAMP entry for patent no. 1,451,906 ( http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?number=1451906&typeCode=0 )

Thanks for all the info.  I had completely forgotten the 2012 discussion.

It was those two curvy lines that I thought I had seen before. After a bit of cleanup I guessed that the logo was BIXBY's with the curvy lines being extensions of the bottom legs of the X . My wife entered that and BOX TERRIER on her tablet and found a nice photo of a BIXBY's BOX TERRIER that had sold on eBay in 2009. I looked on eBay and found one that is very rusty but you can still make out those curvy lines.

So far I have been unable to find a connection between Bridgeport and BIXBY's. Any ideas???
