Rare Pains
« on: October 30, 2014, 05:37:57 PM »
I'm ranting!  It drives me nuts when folks label common tools for sell as rare  (e.g. something I may have 10 of in NOS form).  What is the need to label it anything (vintage, historic, antique, rare)?  Why not just be factual (1 of 12 or 1200, made in 1945)? It just seems dishonest to me, to lure the uneducated in with such a strong title.
"FORGED IN THE USA" myself.  Be good to your tools!

Nothing more than an effort to get more views and bids.

Do you know anything about old tube radio's? I have one in a shed but actually I don't think it's a radio but something to do with amps or something like that.

Don't tell Scott G. about that thing in the garage...    I guess buyer beware is still and always the watchword.

OilyRascal,  look at the positive side,  I just stepped out of the forum and went to EBAY and entered
RARE WRENCH, wow !       830 hits.
entered rare tool, double wow,     7971 hits.

by their standards, we all have rare to semi-rare museums of our own.

rare is it to find a seller that really knows what he is listing, most of us keep a list
of the ones that we know & trust. yes, as stated before me, "buyer beware"

Oily. I agree 100%.  I don't know how that could ever be stopped, but, I wish I did.

I have no problem with labeling something vintage or antique,  it helps when browsing online as long as the item is ACTUALLY vintage or antique (which in a lot of cases they are not). When someone puts RARE that just tells me they probably don't know much about the item that they are selling & they are gonna puta high price tag on it.

I don't use Rare in my posts , but I do use vintage when I know there are modern or repro
of the same item. When you go to google , if you don't put in vintage , you may never find what your looking for.
Of all the things I've lost , I miss my mind the most

Heelspur,
that will sell, it's an All-American 5 (5 tube) if there is no breaks in the bakelite, that is a good colorful one. Dates? around 1946-50. I'm not a collector of post WW2 stuff, but could suggest some people or places to sell it.

How's this one!?  It's not old (or antique), not hand made by a blacksmith,  not a cobbler's hammer and certainly not rare !!  Still available, and I know this seller does not want to know when he is wrong.
