As I was recently griping, there doesn't seem to be a list of these tools
anywhere, there still isn't, but perhaps this will help, it's a start...

The M.T.S.C (Master Technician Service Conference) was started in 1947, but the
'Gold Tool' tool incentives weren't started until 1962. Reasonably decent tools
exist from as late as the mid 90's, so that gives a probable range at least. As
far as I can tell, every year was a different tool, some of the tools have issue
dates on the boxes/pouches, but many do not, and there doesn't seem to be much
logic.

Another trend is that the 70's seem to have favored white rollup type tool
pouches, so that seems to be a plausable guess for those where undated, later
tools got a nice hard plastic box. some early tools got a cardboard box. Then
there's the kewl blue & white styrofoam Pentastar box...

The list below was culled from the net, from various sources, but as usual,
take with a grain of salt, I didn't have much redundent information to verify
some things...

Not MTSC tools:
Gold plated Snap-On screwdrivers seem to show up mixed in with MTSC tools from
time to time, Snap-On issued their own gold plated tools to celebrate various
Anniversary dates over the years. tools include screwdrivers, wrench sets,
socket sets..etc..

I have a pair of the # 426 Channelocks that are marked CHRYSLER MTSC AWARD. I
found them in a junk car at work. Mine look like they were chrome plated, not
gold plated. They were a little rusty so I glass beaded them which took off most
of the remaining chrome.

Great list! Members will be able to use it in hunting and additions/corrections
should be made as they come up.

I have a gold plated Proto 1/4dr round head ratchet marked as a Chrysler MTSC
award. No idea on the age of it though.

I bought this 1/4" set from Bull I think. I can't bring myself to use them. I'm
thinking they were from the late 60's or early 70's.

That is a candidate for display, not use!

I agree with you Papaw

Yessir, you did buy that from me, and I thank you for it.

I wish the box was in better condition, but the tools themselves looked like
they had never been used, or as close to never as you might come. It's a great
little set, IMO.

Bull, Did you have a date on those? BTW I also think it's a nice set.

No, I never did discover a date, but then again I did not actually investigate
the matter, either.

Here is the 1982 Gold tool award. It is a circuit tester buzzbox, for checking
continuity. It is the only one I ever got, when I attended one of the seminars
with a friend. He worked at a dealership his family owned, and I did some part
timing there at night the time while otherwise employed. We both got this, and I
have used mine ever since. Was especially handy on setting points on motorcycles
in the old days!

A blast from the past! Used one many times myself, those who never worked on
point/condenser systems might not know how to use it.

I am sure you are correct. Some skills we acquired in the past have little
application anymore. I miss the simplicity of those times however....

I've seen several gold-plated socket sets in a pentagon-shaped box (with the
Chrysler logo for a cover) for sale on ebay. I assumed they were Bonney tools,
but can't vouch for the year.

Thanks for preparing the gold tool award listing. A couple of additions:
1986 was a Digital Volt Ohm Amp Meter
There is also another micrometer set 1"-2" - don't know the year tho'
the Fluorescent Work Light was 1989
1993 was an Audio Tech Probe

I've got 24+ of these sets - various years between 1960 and 1990. Do you know of
any collectors I might contact???

Spark plug ratchet and socket went for $51 plus shipping yesterday-
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330500425967&ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT

Ratchet set went for $71 plus shipping also yesterday-
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330500425926&ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT

I had bid on them but didn't go that high. They were Bonney tools, clearly
marked.

>Thanks for preparing the gold tool award listing. A couple of additions:

Thank you, have added them to the list, along with a few stray notes that I
hadn't gotten around to adding. Glad someone is using the list, besides papaw,
who is too cheap to buy a gold plated ratchet anyway LOL

Here are three Bonney Chrysler Gold tool award sets I have in my For Sale bin.

A 1/4 dr set, with no ratchet...

Set of angle wrenches, one 3/8 SAE and the rest metric. Leads me to believe the
guy actually had both a metric and SAE set at one time.

A 3/8 ratchet head and mini socket set... with one missing socket.

I picked these up at a garage sale last summer. The original price was very high
because the guy thought they were actually made out of gold.
I explained they were part of a "Gold Award" program and not real gold. Price
came down a whole bunch... but I still paid too much.

I have a set of the line wrenches, mic set, 1/4" socket set, as well as the spark plug , and socket set.

I would never think of selling them however what are they worth, they have never been used..

I loved my Grandpa, he was with Crysler before 1945 as I remember..

Homer Lee Jones , born in 1909 , Gulf Coast Dodge, oh the memories

I wouldn't sell grandpa's tools either, how would you replace them if you regret it later?

As to value, hard to say, these things only rarely pop up for sale, except for the bonney ratchet, I don't think I have ever seen anything twice....

Off the cuff, I suppose they go in the $25-$150 area, but that's a wild guess.
(They don't have real gold in them, or even real gold plate BTW ,
just in case you were thinking of melting them down -P)

PS: Welcome to Tooltalk :)

PPS: Pictures would be enjoyed if you get a chance, this thread is from before the tooltalk forum crash and burn a while ago, and most of the original pictures went poof...

I have a MTSC Micrometer, but I believe that it is in a light blue box, not a black case.  Neighbor knows I collect (hoard) old tools.  He thought I would like it.  If someone collects these, let me know.  It is just taking up space in my rollaway.
