Curious brass square from France
« on: December 21, 2014, 07:42:00 AM »
Does anyone recognise this brass square?? It's on the Outils Anciens forum in France - there is a third scale inside the leg - it appears to be more of a measuring, caliper type, of tool than a square... All scales are in cm

It was presumably made for a specific use...

Can't be a nut cracker so it must be a grape measure...... Neat, never saw that one before.

I have more questions than answers.  Why is the hook 4cm from the zero point? Why is the hook on the opposite side from the scale?   the curseur is obviously for id measurement. What does deux cotes mean? It certainly is a pretty piece.

The hook is on the back side of the scale so it wouldn't be used in a measurement per say.

The hook on the back has a separate scale, not visible in the image above...
