Unusual Ford wrench
« on: May 08, 2011, 02:57:30 PM »
I have seen two of these over the past ten years or so.  This one I bought. Any thoughts by anyone on what it was used for or on?

Square spark plugs?

I have alot of Ford tool information and have never seen any reference to a square socket on the sparkplug headnut wrench.  The open end of that wrench is for the sparkplug, the box end for the head nuts.  I could be wrong but maybe the square end of that was modified.

I did just recently purchase a Ford brace wrench 3Z-684 which has a 19/32" square socket that is used on the running board bolt nuts.     The 5Z-156 L socket wrench also has a square socket.  It looks like it may be 19/32"also. This wrench is used on main bearing bolts.

Bob,
There was a picture of this wrench in the Missouri Valley Wrench Club Newsletter some time ago. That is the only other one I have seen. Was that yours? Does it look like the square box end has been modified? The T5893 number is same found on the regular Ford Model "T" spark plug/cylinder head wrench.

Yes, and this believes me to think it has been modified. I do notice the Moore Drop Forge mark on it, so maybe they made this version, but I doubt it. There is a good Ford forum called the "Ford Barn", that may have more info. as well.

Bus,

Yes, it's the same wrench, but now I have seen a second one.  This leads me to believe Moore made the wrench for some special purpose designated by Ford.

BR Wrench,

The square opening on this wrench is 11/16".

I wonder why they would leave the old part number on the wrench?

One thing hit me about the square sockets 11/16" size.  The most common nut size on the Model T is 11/16" How many 11/16" square nuts could be found on Model T Fords?

Do you suppose it is possible that ford was thinking originally of using square head bolts?

Could it be for ford tractors?

RE: the Ford tractor application for this wrench, I was wondering the same thing today.

The Fordson tractor would be the tractor that would be of the same era as the above Model T wrench.   The early Fordson headnut sparkplug wrench looks like the Model T wrench but it had a different part number and was marked Fordson.  When the Ford 9N tractor came out in 1939 it used the same sparkplug/headbolt wrench as the Ford cars of the time.

I was thinking more of the 50 or so prototypes which would explain the rareness. I dismissed the first Ford tractor company. The only real result from it was the Nebraska tractor laws.

The heads of the Model T and Model A main bearing bolts are square

>The heads of the Model T and Model A main bearing bolts are square

Unfortunatly, they are also 1/2" , on both the A and T.
Except when they are not square...

In any case, there was a wrench for the mains, with a different number...
(more than one in fact, the non-square bolts take a funky weird wrench..)

The other problem is the head bolts aren't 11/16 either, they are 3/8 or 7/16...

It's always possible they just plain screwed up making the wrench, accidently taking old stock that had a ford number in it from the forging dies. The wrench shape is fairly generic, and I can see it being used for making some other special purpose wrench...
