estate sale 3/4" Plomb
« on: March 28, 2015, 06:33:16 PM »
I like estate sales.  Usually the ones run by professionals are best. They know its gotta go and they are not emotionally attached.  Some of the amateurs are unaware of how to sell the tools.  Todays find was being operated by amateur family members but I got lucky on the price.  I got all this and more for $40.   As I was getting the 3/4" drive out of the drawer my best friend (well, he was until today!)   reached over me and grabbed the 3/4" breaker bar.  I got the 3/4" Plomb pebble ratchet  made from 1945-48,  the unbranded 8" extension, the 16"  Williams H115,  and 4 sockets.  A 1 1/2 Williams 3/4" socket,   a 1 7/16" Craftsman  BM  1938 to early 40s,   1 1/4 SK, 1 5/8 Plomb Made in USA,  all 3/4" drive
The Craftsman C-clamps are as nice as new, There are 2 aluminum C-clamps stamped Made in USA and 66704, a 48" metal rule made by Exact Level and Tool.
Seven wrenches, a Williams 34,  1 1/16--7/8,   a Rhode Island Tool company 34, same size,   another 34, Armstrong,    a Williams 31  7/8-25/32, a Chrome Vanadium Steel, number 1137,  a Blackhawk 15624  5/8-11/16,  a  Chrome X Quality 1033C  1-15/16  made from 1936-39.  There was more C clamps but they are not as interesting.

It was a good day  :)

I have two of those 3/4 inch Plomb ratchets. The first one i got needed a rebuild kit installed in it And i will giving it a friend of mine in California this summer. The second one i got only needs one of the side plate screws and appears to have never been used. Both have removable drive plugs. The first one has a  drive plug is marked P&C. I may swap the drive plugs and keep the P&C one for myself. They would make a good weapon in a zombie attack.

Is the 'drive plug' the square shaft?
Your wrenches must be different.  My square shaft is not removable

Nicely done.  I would have paid $50 for the plomb 3/4" pebble alone. It looks to be in grest shape.  Great deals, mske me wantnto go garage shopping.

I take back what i said in my first post about one needing a repair kit in it. It was my Proto 3/4 ratchet that i installed a repair kit it. Both my Plomb's have removable drive plugs. I owned another one a few years ago and it also had a removable drive plug. I am thinking any Plomb 3/4 inch ratchet in the 1945 to 1948 year range with a one piece drive plug has had a Proto repair kit installed in it. Maybe somebody with a Plomb catalog can set the record straight. Anyone have a P&C 3/4 inch ratchet ? Also what type of finish does your 3/4 inch models have. Chrome or plain ? All of mine have a plain steel finish and don't appear to ever having had a chrome finish. Too soon after the war ? P&C chrome or plain finish ?

My 3/4 Proto isn't plated but my 1 inch drive is. The 3/4 doesn't seem to have a removable drive plug but the 1 inch is removable. The 3/4 is about 19 inches long and the 1 inch is about 26 inches long. I can build up my arm strength just picking the 1 inch drive up, I don't think I want to be using it all day.

Lewill2  your 3/4 model appears to have a chrome drive plug while the rest of the ratchet is unplated. I am thinking that drive plug is a replacement. It is interesting that Proto kept the Plomb style handles on their early ratchets. Proto did the same thing on their early line wrenches. I wonder is Plomb / Proto ever made a 3/4 or one inch ratchet on the Penen's style ratchet ?

The back side of the 3/4 drive area is scuffed up and the flash reflected back to make it look like it is plated.
