What can I make with chunk of steel???
« on: June 03, 2015, 04:50:16 PM »
The mine I work at was rebuilding a very large Cat front end loader. This is one of the pins that goes in the arms of the loader. It is 14" long and 6" wide. It weighs right at 135lbs and is harder than hammered hell. I can probably get the other 3 if I want them since they are going to scrap them and go back with all new pins. There are several other pins some are not quite as big as this one is. I'm thinking about making some type of anvil out of this, but not sure where to start. What would you use this chunk of steel for other than scrap??

I dunno... A 135 pound hardened steel pin.

About the only thing that comes immediately to mind is to stand it on end and use it for an anvil/hammering surface.

Best way I find is to tell him you don't want them, after they go to scrap you will find a hundred uses for them, and never forgive yourself for letting them go.

Grab them now, you'll find a use for them.

Yeah, just stand it on end and it's an anvil, no work required :P

Other things to do with it?

You could grind recesses into it and make it a swage. Make a cone. Grind the end into a bowl to use as a sinking dish. The previously mentioned bench dollies. Use it for a power hammer ram/anvil.  Could sell one to me... :D

Be VERY careful hammering on that pin.  It's hard enough to send chips your way when hit!
Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance!

Actually this pin has a 2" hole through the center from one end to the other. They are threaded about two inches deep. This is how they are held in place in the loader arms.
I'm thinking about using it as a wrecking ball. I have a concrete pad I need to break up and haul off. I could hang it off the end of my back hoe bucket from a chain and drop-swing it on the pad and break it up. Save my back from a jack hammer

Hah, well, that's a pretty important tidbit :P

You could make one hell of a slide-hammer with it XD

Or, plug one end of it, add a prick hole, smooth out the bore, and have yourself a cannon.

Already ahead of you on the cannon. This is made from a smaller pin that has a bore of about 1.5". I welded the butt plate on with a modification that will hold a 209 shotgun primer and a spring powered firing pin and added the 2" barrel extension. 300 grains of black powder will make the neighbors a mile away wonder what happened when she goes off. It makes a very nice 4th of July toy.

I been thinking how that would make the perfect slide hammer for easing rusted trailer hitches out of receivers since he mentioned the hole.
