The Devil's Hammer!
« on: September 30, 2016, 05:53:05 PM »
I got off work early today, so I ran around to all the rummage sales I could find.... A very unsuccessful day, as only the first sale yielded anything at all I spent more on diesel than on other people's junk :P

But, in that first stop, I saw an interesting, and very nice looking ball pein hammer... I must have 20 ball peins and never use more than 3 of them, but this one still caught my eye... I could tell right away it was a good hammer, and when I saw the fancy font on the makers mark, I knew I had to have it... I couldn't read it at the time... I thought it said Hephasteus, which seemed apropos for a hammer... But once I got it home and cleaned it with soap and water, it clearly says Mephisto, how cool is that? The company is even still in business! A living anachronism, making caulking tools for cast iron plumbing! That is so cool.

I sent them an e-mail, asking if they could provide me with any age information based on the makers mark, or style, etc... Will let you know if I hear anything back.

You better hope it's a manufacturers mark and not an owner's mark!  He may come for it, and your soul!

Pretty cool find.

I used to have a Mephisto water valve wrench years ago. Pretty sure I sold it on Ebay.

Now that I think of it, I put a handle on one a couple of years ago and have another W/o a handle in a bucket in the workroom.  Both ball peens.

Nice! Did they make pitchforks and scythes as well?
My friends call me Bob. My wife calls me a lot worse.

Very funny....  But you guys inspired me to set it right.
Mine looks to weigh 11 oz. if my postage scale is correct.
3 1/2 by 1 1/8"
I picked up two "vintage" handles today, and one of them is a pretty good fit.  I will have to finesse it a bit, but that is part of the fun.

Neat! I did an eBay search and literally the only result I got was a claw hammer, so it seems to be a pretty uncommon make, though of course some people here have them :P

i haven't gotten a reply to my e-mail yet...
