Tongs? & Eyebolt
« on: May 18, 2017, 06:52:25 PM »
Hello, The tongs measure approx. 18-1/2" long, and the business end has 4 prongs/tines on each side. The eyebolt is approx. 4" long, and appears to have a 5/16-18 threaded end. Any ideas? I bought a box full of these!!!! Regards, Lou

Fireplace tongs? Or for moving hot coals in a forge?

Hello, Papaw. The tines are only 5/16" diameter, I would be concerned that high heat would distort them. Thanks, Lou

I was thinking perhaps for grabbing bulk nails.

most bins had a single tined handle used like a rake to drag the nails.

    the tines looks like that.

I was thinking of nails also. Maybe for taking them out of the shipping keg. That would explain the long length.

If you need something to do, you could practice picking them up with the tongs.

Hello, Mike. I tried it, not enough mass in the pile of eyebolts. The only ones that stayed in were the ones that got caught in the eye. Now I am thinking this may not be for nails, it would be too difficult to plunge these into a nail bin, The nails claws I have seen are perpendicular to the handle, and used more like a rake.I will keep searching. Maybe for handling miniature vises? :-) Regards, Lou

I've got a lot of I-bolts off of motors and pumps.  They are screwed into the top for lifting. Those are usually cast, with round eyes.

I dont recall any 5/8 eye bolts with a flattened side in old hanger catalogs, but im still checking.. lots of weird old pipe hangers. The fact that you got a bix full also indicates some kind of hanger attachment.

Hello, Chillylulu. Thanks for looking. I brought one to our local hardware seller, and he is not sure what they could have been ordered for. The size of these is 5/16  shank diameter, with a 5/16-18 threaded end. Thanks again, Lou
