Simuliarity of Barcalo & John Deere wrench ends
« on: May 29, 2017, 12:19:08 PM »
Was getting some wrenches ready to sell and noticed for the first time that a Barcalo with the "Convex" handle design and a John Deere marked wrench have the same shape to their open end pockets. First off I guess is who made the TY3499 Deere wrench, then was that particular shape of an open end patented. I looked at the patent Barcalo was issued for the "Convex" handle and nothing was mentioned about the shape of the pocket. So inquiring mind redirected me here cause I know somebody here will know the answers. TIA for your help.

JD is Bonney and the Barcalo wrench has been suggested as being associated with Fairmount but hasn't been confirmed.
The "V cut" wrench has been around a long time. There are examples that have been around longer than automotive tools. The earliest automotive style wrench that I can think of is Cornwell.

The earliest I know of Bonney's with the V-gullet is the 1967 catalog, where it mentions introducing the "Hex-Fit" open end. Bonney made John Deere wrenches at some point (years unknown), so that is probably where they got it. But the V-gullet itself goes way back as has already been said.
