Today's yard sale finds, and a question (of course).
« on: June 22, 2018, 06:10:44 PM »
Found a great yard sale today, and best of all the tools were cheap! A complete Western Auto socket set, and a Billings & Spencer S-adjustable. Both the socket set and wrench were $1 EACH!!! I do have a question about the adjustable wrench, the ones shown on AA have parallel jaws... not so much on this one. Is this correct?

Being a novice tool collector these are both firsts for me that's why I'm so excited.

Nice picks.
The socket set is Indestro made for Western Auto me thinks..
The S-Adjustable, if you look closely the fixed jaw is smooth while the face of movable jaw is angled and has teeth. They are generally considered to be for pipe work as far as I know.
A person who could really read human minds would be privileged to gaze on some correct imitations of chaos.

Yep pipe wrench version.

What a steal! Great buys!
You might say I have a tool collecting problem....

You did well!  Nice clean set--and a nice Billings and Spencer.
BTW, the Spencer is the same fellow who went shooting with Abe Lincoln near the Washington Monument and sold him some newfangled rifles.

The "adjustment lock" feature on the B&S  "S" handle is patent no. 804,351.  The DATAMP entry (http://www.datamp.org/patents/displayPatent.php?number=804351&typeCode=0 ) includes images of the "nut wrench" and "pipe wrench" "new product announcements"  from 1905 - 1908.

I was wondering about that but forgot to ask, thanks for the info!
