One of my recent car boot sale finds, is this long and skinny 3/4" x 3/4" Cornwell 1452 spanner. Can anyone tell me does it have a special use ?

Scroll down to Figure 78.  Looks like some version of it:  a specialty wrench.

Jaws look a little thick for a tappet wrench.

rustyric,

I agree with Bill H. above.  Not a tappet wrench.. too thick.

More likely a longish angle wrench.  The wrench number in the photo does not show the alpha prefix... if it is an angle wrench it should start with an "AW" followed by a number.  Also, if it is an angle wrench both open ends will be the same size (which it has, i.e. 3/4" x 3/4").

Hope this helps...

One of the interesting things about online forums and the communities that build up around them is that each such forum and community winds up attracting a particular mix of folks with knowledge often related only vaguely to the official topic of the forum (wrenches and Perfect Handle items here, woodworking somewhere else).  There's a lot more people with telecom experience here, for instance, than I find other places.

This is exactly why I started Tool Talk !  I am no expert on any one subject , but hoped to draw a membership that collectively could address most subjects.

In that I think I have succeeded.

My Craftsman tappet wrenches get significantly thicker as they get larger. That still doesn’t address why the Cornwell is so thin, though.
