Stanley Librerty Bell plane

Stopped by an antique/junk shop yesterday, hoping they might have a Liberty Bell transitional plane for me.  Spotted one on the bottom shelf, half hidden behind a couple of auto jacks.  Recognized the weird adjustment lever right away.

This one didn't have a tote.  Or a knob.  Or the coveted cap or screw.  And one of the frog assembly front screw holes was broken.  And the body had been attacked by termites.  Yes, termites.  And the guy wanted $14.

The hunt goes on.

About a year ago went to a farm auction that had wood planes listed.  They were all actually wooden planes and every one had been partially destroyed by termites, including the totes and knobs.

Probably quite the delicacy, wooden planes.  After all that framing lumber, some nice beech must be a treat!

Are you confident they were termites and not some other species of woodborer?
