Disston No. 5 Shearing Loppers
« on: December 11, 2018, 12:13:17 AM »
A coworker spotted these at a yard sale and picked them up for $2 and gave them to me. Disston No.5 Shearing Loppers.  18 inches.  Most of the original orange paint is still on the handles.  This is listed in the 1939 and 1945 catalogs as seen. The blade is still sharp enough to cut your finger if you run it along the edge.

I saw a pair similar to those a few years ago.  Can't remember for sure but it seems they were larger.  The condition was nowhere as good as yours, and the guy was asking $15 or so.
The ORIGINAL Northwoods.

The prices on eBay vary.  The larger sizes like the No. 9 which is 36 inches appear to bring higher prices.

I have several modern ones so this one doesn't have to be used, but I will probably use them occasionally.

I do keep him supplied with coffee, so he doesn't have to drink the office swill.

This tool was also listed in the 1932 catalog.  I was hoping the logo would help determine when it was made, but unlike their saw badges it appears Disston USA was used on pruners much earlier.
