New info on yellow handled Proto screwdriver's.
« on: May 22, 2011, 01:45:29 AM »
I originally posted this on GG but I know some of you guys don't post these and I'd like to see if you guys have any info on the topic.

I picked up another large Proto. Now my son and I each have one. Unfortunately, they're not the same. They have the same part number but I noticed differences. Now I've got to get BOTH sets.

Here are the differences.

My original Proto has the UL mark on the handle and the tip is aligned with the shank.

The new one has the ® on the handle and the tip is rotated 45 degrees.

Finally, The UL handle is just a touch shorter than the ® handle.

Love those old Proto yellow handles. They fit my hand. I have a lot of them, and still use them.

I have a very odd Proto style screwdriver. It has a Proto style handle with a round shank and a 5/16 inch wide flat tip. It is 8 inches long. Handle is marked MFD. D9604 U.S.A. and the other side is marked BET'R-GRIP. The real odd thing about the s-driver is the handle is a clear plastic with silver metal flakes in it. BET'R-GRIP was a logo used by both J.P.DANIELSON and PLOMB. J.P DANIELSON became part of the PLOMB / PROTO empire. I can't post a picture, but i can send a picture to anyone who wants to see it by sending me a email at evildr235@webtv.net and i will send you one in  a return email.

Sounds like it's from the Proto family. The 9604 is a 4" round shank with 5/16" flat tip.

I'd love to see a picture of that handle.

I changed the s-driver tip size on my post to 5/16 because of possible tip wear. To see it you must email me at evildr235@webtv.net and I will send you a few in a return email. I am not on a computer. I am on a antique web browser and have no way to post pictures here.

here we have the P&C version round shank.  The tip has been modified so I did not measure it.

Thanks,
