Yes, I know what it is and how to use it

You-all know I like wood boxes and here is a fine set of tools in a wood box.  Will let you guess awhile and I'm sure oldnslo will know what it is, but if so hold back and give the young guys a chance.  Will tell what it does and how to use it later.

looks lot nicer than the cheap newer sets (most of which only come with 2-3-4 cutters...   ).

Well since several know, it is a valve seat resurfacing set.  As you can see it is in perfect condition due to the fact that the owner had each of the tools wrapped in oily cloth when I bought it at a garage sale.  The cutting surfaces are very sharp, they obviously had not been used much.  To use, open the valve all the way and then unscrew the top.  Take out the stem and insert the proper sized tool.  Screw the top of the valve back on the valve with the cutting surface inside and the shaft sticking out of the hole.  The spring which is inside provides the proper tension.  Turn the tool to resurface the seat.

Well, I learned something today and I like that.
Now if I ever see a set at least I'll know what I'm looking at.

Just to clarify… I will add that these are for globe valves not gate valves.

What does the handle look like?  Tapered square socket?

I was speculatin' on that being the tool when I saw the pictures, but I'd never seen a large set like that.  I have/used to have/if I still have I don't know where the same tool for spigots/faucets/whatever y'all call them in your neck of the woods.  I used it once or twice years back, but most of my spigots now are either ball valves or cartridge valves.

I have had two complete sets, and there was no handle with either one.  Neither was there any space in the box for a handle.  Thus cannot answer your question.

Would it be possible that one uses the valve handle to operate the seat cutter, the shaft diameters would be the same and the valve handle would need to be removed to take the spindle out of the body, so your handle would be onsite - no need to carry one c/w adapters for the various stem sizes. My thoughts, i have had no experience in using this tool.
Cheers.

Good thought, never came up with that idea myself, but it makes sense.
