Pattern Maker or Founder's Tool??
« on: May 13, 2019, 06:15:22 PM »
Hello, Another piece from a pattern maker's box. 8-1/4" long, 1" high, aluminum, steel point that has a flat, parallel to the bottom. Thanks, Lou

Looks like a user made sand casting slick to me.

Hello, Wvtools. Thanks for the reply. I have never heard the term "sand casting slick". There were a lot of other user made tools in the box!!! Regards, Lou

I think they were called slicks, but my copy of Sellens  is packed away for a flea market selling trip.  Most of them were short and rounded on the outside with a rectangular or squarish handle on the inside.

My curiosity got the best of me, and I went out to the truck to get my book.  On page 305 and 306 of Sellens, there are several moulder's tools listed.  The slicks listed are button, egg, half round corner, inside corner, pipe and square corner.

Doesn't look familiar to me, but then I haven't seen everything!2 pages of foundry tools.  page on right has slickening tools. Thee ones I have  and others I have seen are about 2-4" long. many are brass.

I have always thought of a slick in masonry terms, (narrow 1/8" to 3/4") flexible, for slicking mortar from a hawk into brick joints. Regards, Lou
