Eggbeater hand drill ID
« on: August 24, 2019, 09:51:53 PM »
Looking for a name and model of a very distinctive hand drill very similar to the one pictured here.  It is 13 3/4" long
The drive wheel has eight spokes, the crank is s-shaped and attached to the axle.  The profile of the casting opposite the crank is exactly like the one pictured here.
There is only one gear--with no idler.  The chuck is marked Millers Falls PAT'D AUG 14 18??
But mine has a quite unusual handle.  The knob is a fancy mushroom shape, 2 3/4" diameter.
Any eggbeater enthusiasts out there?

Northwoods, it looks a lot like this very early Millers Falls no. 2. Check out the link below.

If you tap on the picture, it will blow it up a bit.

Thanks for the tip.  I had seen the picture early in my hunt, but disregarded it because my solid handle is much more ornate than the one pictured.

Looks like Aug 14 18?? was Aug 14 1877.  It was a Tuesday, the day of the week for patents back in the day.  Sales for the chuck began the next year: 1878.

It appears that I have the body of a No. 2 drill with the chuck of a No. 1 drill (max diameter 1/8") and a handle much different from any I have seen anywhere on the web.   The explanation may appear someday, or it may be lost to history.
