Box lot items from todays auction
« on: September 14, 2019, 03:54:54 PM »
I bought so many tools at a Friday and today a Saturday auction it will take me a month to go through it all.  The Girder wrench (Joseph Lucas Ltd England) and the Winchester offset plier were in a $10.00 box lot today.  I knew they were in the box mixed with a bunch of other rusty pliers and screwdrivers.  They are the only items I cleaned so far.

Nice finds!! Love the look of that Girder wrench! That’s so cool. Well done Coolford!
I went to the market yesterday and found nothing quite as good as you but happy with 12” Gedore shifter and a last dig find of a Blue Point 9/16 combination. I think these have some connection to Snap-on?

Well, the $10.00 box lot was better than I thought.  Besides the wrench there were 13 pliers, some uncommon.  Picture one from the top, Berg piano plier, Sweden, Tomas & Betts Co. crimper, Winchester offset, Bernard 6.5" and Bernard 4.5".  Second picture from the top, Klein side cutter, Stanley sweetheart thin nose, Utica side cutter Bell System and a Made in USA.  Last picture again from the top, Barre?, Forged Steel with strange hinge, Stubi Austria and lastly Sheffield England.

Nice lot.  The Thomas & Betts crimper is the one I use when I want a really good crimp on a connector.

Hey coolford,

You certainly came away with some nice pliers!  There’s so many GREAT old tools out there that sit for decades unused and/or deteriorating from neglect.  You saved a few more, coolford!  It’s so easy to go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and pick up something made over seas on the cheap, while there’s practically a glut of much better quality used tools to be had on the used tool market.  I guess the drawback is that one may not have the time to go to an auction or access to one nearby.  There’s always online auctions, but hot deals may not always be as plentiful.  For ten bucks and a little time, I’d say you hit a home run!

The third one down here

looks a lot like the pliers that were standard issue in the toolkits for air-cooled VWs.  Those pliers were, at one time, common as dirt in yard sales - either there were a lot of bugs and buses out there missing their toolkits, or they reproduced at night and escaped.

Yes, Bill I have had a couple of them, but they were not marked Stubi Austria like the one shown.

No, the VW pliers were unmarked.  I owned some, didn't keep them - I found them of limited use.  Probably, that was a mistake; I bet there are people trying to complete their VW toolkits...
