You mean besides hitting things?

Could it have just been a 99-cent-counter hammer?

Later edit: Could it have been an inexpensive carpet tack hammer?  Most such hammers I've seen have actually been upholstery hammers, with considerably longer heads (presumably to get into difficult spots on chairs/sofas/etc.), but if what you needed was to tack the carpet down, this would be enough.  But I'm just speculatin' here.

8" long is too big for a candy hammer, no pry bar end means not a cigar box hammer.  Cast iron?  Does it look like it had a chain or ring thru the handle?  Old fire extinguisher cabinet hammer (break glass in case of fire)?  I think the last ones I installed had pot metal hammers.

amecks must be a Beatles fan also. My wife met Paul McCartney at the Portland Oregon airport about 5 years ago. she worked there and had access to the VIP area where him and his posse was. she got to shake his hand, get his autograph and talk to him for a few minutes. It was a special time for her. She has been a fan since they first came here.

on closer examination this mark which I thought was just caused by beating the hammer against something shows up. Mean anything to anyone?
No sign of chain thru handle.

Characters remind me of Arabic (or similarly written languages).   Don't know the meaning or use though.

I have what I think is an identical hammer. I'm on the road for a few more days but i'll post a picture of mine when I'm back at home. Not 100% sure where I got mine but I'm pretty sure in was some where in Northern British Columbia and I'm thinking I'v had it about 10 to 15 years.

Got back home and dug out that little hammer for some pictures. Mine has a very similar mark as yours but the close up I took is no good so I'll try again tomorrow. Mine is also 8" long, same as yours.

That's interesting.   I finally figured out it was either for neutering, or cracking nuts.   Maybe both.
