Brass wedges...?
« on: December 10, 2019, 07:58:59 PM »
These were in the toolbox I purchased today.  The box had a lot of plumbing and electrical items in it.  These wedges look like hammer wedges but they are brass or bronze.  About an inch long and have finely ridged sides.  What are they?

Is one side flat? Use in pairs like a step block?

Toilet wedges for uneven floors.   New ones are clear plastic or nylon.

Or this one? This AMPCO  AL/BR hammer had two brass or bronze wedges in it.

Hello, I thought toilet wedges too, but brass or bronze up against a toilet bowl?? With ridges?? All I see is an accident waiting to happen!!! I know things were made better back in the day, and I am not a big fan of things being replaced by plastic. For shimming a wobbly toilet I have always used a wood shim, easy to adjust, won't damage the fixture, and easy to trim out of sight Regards, Lou

When considering the contents of the toolbox, toilet wedges makes sense.  There are a lot of brass plumbing fittings, probably for factory settings rather than home plumbing.  The selection of screwdrivers and awl suggests electrical work.
Thanks

Every time I've installed toilet wedges, I've had to trim them to get rid of the excess thickness.  Trimming those would be a chore.
