15 inch Cresecnt -- Help with Dating
« on: March 23, 2020, 09:50:47 PM »
I've reviewed lots of vintage Crescent wrenches (including those on Alloy Artifacts) and haven't been able to match this 8" adjustable wrench to one of those.

One side reads as follows:

15in ------- Crescent -------   MADE IN U.S.A.

Other side reads as follows:

15in ------- Crescent -------   MADE IN U.S.A.               40

NO (R) symbol accompanies the Crescent.   No Jamestown or Crestoloy references.

If anyone can give me an approximate date on this wrench, it would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Crescent wrenches are notoriously hard to date.  The thickness of the head is an indicator, of course.
A little light oil and steel wool will make it look beautiful, though; that is for sure.
The ORIGINAL Northwoods.

The handle design places it well after WW-2. Probably late 50's or 60's.

I bet I have over 100 adjustable wrenches and not one has a tapered handle. All the years I have been buying tools, I have yet to see one in person.

I think tapered handles are only on 15 inch or larger.

My 18 inch & 24 inch both have tapered handles. I didn't look at any of the others I have.

Hello, At top is a Crescent 18"  with a straight handle. The next 3 have tapered handles; another Crescent 18", an S-K 16", and at bottom is a Williams 15" . Regards, Lou
