H. Westphal Countertop Wood Screw Carousel, Patent 1874
« on: September 27, 2020, 05:39:40 PM »
Picked at a auction yesterday.
Wood screw carousel?  I need internet search help with it.  Please PM me if your a good searcher.

Photo update of Westphal countertop carousel.
I think its for wood screws. Smallest bin marked "3/8  3", largest bin marked 3  18.

This is unreal to me!  It has this small label stuck to a bottom bin divider, "Patterson General Hardware" sold out in 1895 according to Google book "Farm Implement News" Jan. 1895 page 50.

Its in worst shape than first thought, the fact of PO's moving this contraption without taking it a part is the reason for the damage and missing parts at the bottom.  Its extremely fragile and assembled as a "house of cards" in reverse.  Loosening 1 tensioning bolt and that level of bins literally falls apart.

HELP!

That is nice! no idea what one would bring around here, some stuff goes for pennies then stuff that  should be scrapped  goes for 1000's.

A bunch of pics (5000+) of tools and projects in our shoppe

Absolutely incredible find!!! I'm guessing the drawer fronts are cast?? Are the drawer boxes wood or metal??

Very true!

Absolutely incredible find!!! I'm guessing the drawer fronts are cast?? Are the drawer boxes wood or metal??
Bin fronts are cast, its not pullout drawers.  One would rotate bins around to have enough opening above the target bin to reach in and grab items.  Bin sides are cast and fastened to the core.  Bin bottom is thin loose laid tin holding exact bin width dimension.

Absolutely a great find worthy of restoration!
Thanks, but gonna need help from someone thats done 1. Very complicated house of cards.  Maybe 100's of parts with precise/exact dimensions

I think this is it!!

   Patent Number 154307.

Seems tobe a couple patents to the carousel, i believe this 1 is of 1882 design.  This was at auction 10 miles from Akron Indiana.

found one on Pinterest

Google found me 2 different images of it, 1 restored and 1 original.
I'm gonna post a video of it tomorrow showing construction and operation best i can..

Hats off to you!  I would have had to pass unless they were giving it away.  I look forward to seeing future progress.
You might say I have a tool collecting problem....

Gorgeous. Most screw storage (and mine) is plastic. That one is cast iron and glass. Fixed up, I'm sure it would be even better. But being cast iron--it has to weigh close to a ton!

Before starting to restore it decide exactly where you want it positioned before starting reassembling......

What a construction ! Are you going to attempt to restore it ?

Construction?  More like major RUBE-NESS.  Haven't decided yet, if so gonna be some major patience is required.

Before starting to restore it decide exactly where you want it positioned before starting reassembling......

I'm not falling for not making it mobile,  I'm gonna fasten a platform under it with handles for 2 guys before restoring it.  I can't emphasize how lame this thing is not being designed for moving it when it had tobe relocated.  I broke 3 bottom course bin sides just getting it loaded in the truck with 3 guys.

Here's another video of stuff i missed about it in the previous vid.  Before going to my foundry guy anyone know of any parts for it??? lol.
