Ima chain drill dummy
« on: April 22, 2012, 01:06:36 PM »
I bought a chain drill at auction yesterday.

APR 238 by skipskip, on Flickr

And I have read the posts here about how they work. But i dont quite get it.

they are only good if you need to drill a hole right next to a beam?

that must limit their use quite a bit.

Or maybe I misunderstood.

Any help?

thanks

More like, Into a beam, or a pipe.

beams and pipes are steel, and steel was always a problem to drill, and you need lots of holes in the beams for bolts or rivits, so anything that helped was worthwhile. (Drill bits used to be only slightly harder than most steel things that were being drilled..)

But yes, it's not much use if you are drilling a hole in a plate or something....

Where I thought that they would be handy was for drilling overhead into a wood beam. No need to push up.

Where they really shine is drilling into pipe or a wood beam when on a ladder, where you can't push, whether it be manual or electric drill.   You can add onto that chain, go clear around something big.   Just stand there and turn the crank, no pushing needed, feeds it-self right in.  Here are a few of mine, have used them several times.  Now to get the right style of drill bit, round shank, square tapered, or something else?  That Millers Falls chuck looks terrific, and is a 2-jaw?

Tighten  bit into chuck,  place chain feed device into a brace drill.  stretch out the chain, lay to one side.  Now look at the threaded portion of the shank.  The part the chain is attached to needs to be spun down, away from the user, heft the drill, wrap the chain around the target to be drilled, swing the chain back and hook it.  Watch as you crank the brace, the shank, chuck, and bit feed into the target, the chain part stands still.  Done with the first hole, then you have to back that part with the chain hooks back down, chain up and go again for hole no.2 and so on.

Preferred method of use-

Mount device into presentation quality wood box, felt lined with glass front.

Place neatly made card behind glass containing words "Emergency Use Only"

Glue box completely shut!

Hang box on office wall.

This boxed device will be very valuable in evaluating potential employees.
Those worthy of hire will make disparaging remarks about the damn thing.

I think I'd screen them by having them try to guess what it was used for.  See if they got an imagination or not.

Hire the first one that tries to put a fire out with it.

Wouldn't that automatically qualify him as manager material?
