3” scroll pliers
« on: May 02, 2011, 04:10:35 AM »
Howdy folks, I had posted this on the old forum so I will repost it here. I’m looking for a pair of 3” scroll pliers. Preferably old ones in work order… they would look something like these…

Brian-

I'll let you know if I find two pairs.

Seriously, I'll keep my eyes open.  I have a pair that John Suttle made up from another pair of tongs, and a small pair made by somebody a long time ago out of a pair of Button pattern pliers.  Both are right handy.

What, exactly, are scroll pliers. I see the picture, but what is the history of them, what are they for?  I might be asking a stupid question, but, I've never heard the term before
cheers, bird

Scroll pliers or tongs are used to bend the fancy curls and loops and such in wrought iron work and the like…

Bird,

Here's a link to see what they look like https://www.blacksmithsdepot.com/page.php?theLocation=/Resources/Product/Tongs_and_Pliers/OC_Srolling_Tongs.xml/

Note the way the jaws are made round to grip the work, but not mar the hot metal like regular pliers would.
