Hi
« on: February 23, 2013, 04:53:59 PM »
I'm interested in old hand tools, in particular old socket sets, wrenches, etc... I just find myself buying, or acquiring old tools all the time, even if I have the modern equivelent.

I just got an old Bethlehem Spark Plug Company socket set, but there are a couple sockets missing from the set, so I'm currently trying to complete the set(good luck right?).

I enjoy wrenching on my Russian Ural motorcycle, lawnmowers, snow blowers, etc..., and I just kind of get a kick out of using tools that are still quality, no matter how old they are, and learning how people did things before my time.

Looks like a great forum!

Welcome to Tool Talk!!

I ride a BMW, and would like to own a URAL someday.

Urals do need a little more periodic wrenching, a little more than most BMW's, but the smiles per KM is worth it. Plus the maintenance is super easy. Look for '07 or newer.

I'll post some pics and list what I'm missing tomorrow. Thank you!

Welcome from Cheyenne, Wyoming.  I too am new here, and like you I collect old quality tools for use in my shop.  Good Luck on finding your missing sockets.  It always feels great when you find something that is missing from a set or a tool etc.  I have been fairly fortunate in that regard.  Recently I purchased a George Scherr NY USA tool box that was missing the key.  After several trips to the different local antique stores and flea markets, I actually found the correct key yesterday-which cost only $1.  I have had similar luck in the past, and it is always very gratifying to find something like that.

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome!

Been busy this week, so I haven't had time to catalog my sockets(to find the missing ones).

I've used the socket set a couple times, as so far I seem to have the ones I use the most. When I use one of these old sockets, it always makes me wonder about all the great things these tools might have done, maybe fix a tractor, old car, etc...

But they do!
Our imagination and whatever we can discern from the tool itself will help us see the stories.
