2 differnrt wood match plane set
« on: June 20, 2013, 11:45:17 AM »
A set of Ohio Tool Co match set of 7/8" tongue & groove planes.
Also, a Way & Sherman 5/8" match set. Same question, any idea of dates made?
Picked these both up a while ago at a garage sale. Any idea of how I can get a rough date of when they were made?
Thanks for any help

The Way & Sherman planes were made between 1849-1852.  "William Way and Byron Sherman were hardware dealers who marked planes.  They succeeded Barry, Way, and Sherman."
As to who actually made the planes...your guess is as good as mine.

From the EAIA "Directory of American Tool Makers"

Sorry, but no help on the Ohio's.

Way & Sherman mark in 2 lines is rated to stars in "American Wooden Planes" Single line with 3 N. York stamps in a triangle under the Way & Sherman stamp is rated 3 stars. 2 stars means 100 - 250 examples known as of 2001, 3 stars between 50 - 100 examples known.

Ohio Tool started in 1823 and was in business until 1920. Most all marks by Ohio Tool are frequently found.
