I'm still confused. As far as I know the first Craftsman tool catalog was 1938. Are you saying that it's available along with all the other years not on your list?

OK, I think the problem is that the years listed are the only issues that I am aware of that even exist. For instance, to the best of my knowledge, there is no 1940 Hand Tool or Mechanics Tool catalogue. Likewise 1941, 1944, 1945, 1946, etc. There may very well be other years, but if so, I have never seen them...

(You are correct that the 1938 catalogue is the earliest known. I am calling that same catalogue 1939 in my list; it is undated and some even think it is from 1940...)

So the following catalogues represent all hand or mechanic tool catalogues that I am sure exist from 1938 (or 1939 or 1940 - whatever the case may be) to 1981/82. Obviously, there are later catalogues, but I am less interested in those.

Years that I know of that are currently available:

1942
1949
1954
1957
1959
1960
1964
1966
1968
1970
1972/73

Years already in the possession of m_fumich, but not yet scanned & posted:

1952 Mechanics Tools
1969 Power & Hand Tools
1972 Power & Hand Tools
1974/75 Power & Hand Tools
1975/76 Power & Hand Tools (m_fumich to provide  )

Years that I know exist, but are not presently available to the best of my knowledge:

1939 Mechanics Tools
1947 Mechanics Tools
1953 Mechanics Tools
1955 Mechanics Tools
1971 Power & Hand Tools
1973/74 Power & Hand Tools
1976/77 Power & Hand Tools
1977/78 Power & Hand Tools
1978/79 Power & Hand Tools
1979/80 Power & Hand Tools
1980/81 Power & Hand Tools
1981/82 Power & Hand Tools
and later...

I just bought this one, though it may be available elsewhere. It is from the year I was born.

This thread got me wondering sp I went to AA and found a bunch of old catalogs listed in his C-man reference pages. Check it out.

The AA references are as follows:

1938?    Craftsman Tools
1942    Craftsman Mechanics Tools
1947    Full
1949    Half
1952    Half
1953    Half
1954    Full
1955    Full
1957    Full
1960    Full
1962?    Full
1964    Full
1966    Full
1968        Full

Their 1938 is my 1939 (as per above). The only other differences in the two lists are I have a 1959 listed missing from the AA list while they have a 1962 listed that I don't. As you can see, they seem to be unsure of the 1962 date (1938 too) as shown by the question mark they placed after the date. My 1959 date was taken from second-hand info that claimed the catalogue in question was so dated by Dave the Toolman.

It would appear that the 1962 AA catalogue and the 1959 Dave the Toolman catalogue might be the same with a disagreement regarding the date..?

I told you I was confused. Now it's worse because I stuck my nose in the Vlchek wrench misunderstanding.

John Pilgrim posted the 1959 catalog on his site as 1960, but Rose already had the 1960 up. I asked Dave on the old C-man site and he said John's was a 1959. Since Dave was dedicated to putting all the catalogs on CDs and has a large collection of tools, I took his word for it.

A couple of months ago someone on ebay named firstclass4 started selling old C-man 3/4"dr socket sets and ratchets along with 4 CD sets of Catalogs from the 20's up to the 60's. The guy (I think it was Dave) kept cancelling the auctions and relisting so I just stopped bidding on the tools. The Cds were auctioned as "more than 10 sets available" but the day I went to "buy it now" for $30 + $7 shipping, he pulled it with 3 or4 days remaining and was never heard from again. Too bad I was slow in getting to buy them, it would have saved alot of confusion.

There are several earlier Power Tool Catalogs from Sears, Roebuck, & Co. [not necessarily Craftsman, but some tools changed names, and may have morphed into Craftsman later] at www.roseantiquetools.com.  In the 1931 catalog, though, there are at least two circular saws and about four drills carrying the Craftsman name.
Arrogance and Ignorance have more in common than their last four letters!

LG,
Did you miss the listing for 1941?

The 1948 catalog was printed in Oct or Nov 1947 so some may call it 1947.

Whatever happened to the 1974/75 and 1975/76 catalogs?

LG,

Did you miss the listing for 1941?

I've never seen a 1941 catalogue and didn't know one existed. Have you seen a shot of the cover?

Sears seems to call it 1947:

Matt (m_fumich) isn't going to scan any more catalogues until he upgrades his version of Acrobat...

And, for that matter, I don't know what Dave is calling a 1963 catalogue either...

I'm not aware of anything between the 1960 and 1964 editions.

Here's a link to the 1947 /48 catalog on ebay. If it is a first printing then I would say it was 1948. It could also be a second printing of the 1947 catalog. Who really knows.

As for Dave, I haven't the slightest idea on what he calls what. I was going to purchase his 1920s / 1930s CD and his 1940s CD but he pulled the auctions with 3 or 4 days left. I was also bidding on the original cut up catalogs for the same span but he cancelled the auctions. Ending auctions early is nothing new to him, he starts them low and when the price doesn't shoot out of sight he cancels them.

That's very bad form and eBay should ban him for such bullshit.

Well, I'm heading out for the night & I just tried to bid on this, but the seller won't ship to Canada...

If anyone wants to bid on my behalf, and forward it to me upon receipt, I'll reimburse you for a bid up to $11.57! Seriously...
