T2178 Model T Spark Plug Wrench
« on: November 30, 2013, 04:37:10 PM »
Back in September, I scored a pile of tools at the MVRC auction in the box lots.  Rustcollector pointed out that one piece was worth what I paid for the pile. Needless to say, my ears perked up.  The piece was a Model T double ended socket marked T2178.  I put it up on Ebay and although I didn't pay for the auction, $60 was OK.  Today, Strik9, who posts here occasionally,  sent me a PM.  I thought it was worth posting as it is not common knowledge.  The PM:

As a matter of fact I did figure out a bit about the T2177 / T2178 spark plug socket.

Ford T spark plug tool history, more or less:

1909-1910:     T1904 is the spark plug tool, they were lightly made and few survive.  This is a socket and bar type.   T2356 is the dealer tool, that is a socket on a short bar shaped like a pipe.

1910-1911:     T2356 becomes issue and the T2335 becomes the dealer tool, it is longer but still does not carry the head bolt end.

1913:      T2177 (bar) and T2178 which is the heavy cast socket version of T1904 becomes issue.  T5393 is the new dealer tool which is the T2335 of 1911 with a head bolt socket on the other end now.      I have one of these.   It has taken the common form we know.

1914:    T2335 old style is out, T5393 becomes the new T2335 and is issued with the cars.

1922:     T2335 with the 5/8" socket end is replaced with the new 6 point box end type to the end of the Ford T run in 1927.

Ford tool date ranges are always fuzzy, if a depot ran out fast, the changed to the new faster.  If old stocks existed they used them up until ordering more.  That tends to fuzz the cutoff dates a lot.  Add in the factor there were 7 tools in the kit, the kits could vary a lot for 5 cars of the same year from different sales areas.

The T2178 is rare as hen's teeth as far as I know.  Only one year or so of issue.  Only the T1904 and the T2356 are rarer because they were crap tools and many wore out, broke or were replaced by better tools.   All I have is fuzzy T manual drawings of the T1904 and pictures ripped from the web of the other two.    A quick google image seach got mine, I was amazed really.

I hope this helps a little bit.   Thank you for asking, I've had this research done a year now and up to today is had been worthless.
