Howdy folks. The link above goes to my photo album at google, shows my maternal grandfather's toolbox and the tools inside. He passed away in 1975, so it is a bit of a time capsule. Nothing fancy in it really, but there are a few interesting pieces in it to me. Besides, I'm sentimental about it, even tho' I was a baby when he passed, it is cool to have his tools. There is one tool in there, I'm trying to figure out what it is.. this one here: http://picasaweb.google.com/Woogeroo...72004479110946 Anyway, if you have any interesting tidbits to add about any of the tools, I'd love to read them. Most of them just seem to be plain jane parts store type tools... but I'm merely curious as to how old some of them are. This is the other real interesting piece, my dad says it is a 'tack hammer' : http://picasaweb.google.com/Woogeroo...71720590907794 Thanks... check 'em out and enjoy. -W |

Yes, a tack hammer. The small end is probably magnetic and split. You would hold the tack in it to start it, then flip the hammer to drive it in.
The other item is a pair of nippers. There are many types and some were used by farriers to trim hooves and to "nip" off the horseshoe nails. And by the way, welcome back! We haven't heard from you in a while.

yes, in some of the other shots of the tack hammer you can see the split end.
on the handle it reads: magnetic more on the cutters: my mom said my grandmother kept 'em next to this old, old sewing machine she had, which from what she said, was probably an old foot powered one.. as she said the sewing machine had belonged to my great grandmother. She also said that sometimes grandfather would take it with him to the woods when he was cutting a certain type of fence wire. -W |

Was 'westline' the brand name for tools sold at Western Auto ? That name was on several tools and on the back of one was a mention of western auto supply.
Another brand I was unfamiliar with was 'wizard'. Was that a private label for some retail store or something? The tool box and the ratchets were 'fleet' branded tools. -W |

Westline and Wizard were Western Auto tools.

I believe WIZARD is also a Western Auto brand of tool. FLEET brand tools is part of the PLOMB tool company group. Go to a search engine and type in ALLOY ARTIFACTS for alot of useful information on hand tools.
