Hi and welcome from Wisconsin.  Go to H O M E at the top of the page and search 'rust'.  It's  a little disconnected, but there is a lot to learn if you read a bunch of it. I use vinegar with some success.

molasses 6:1 to 10:1 with water is great.

it wont eat the metal if you leave it in too long.
buy molasses at a feed store though or it is too expensive.
at $4.50 plus all the water it is far cheaper than $3 per Gal. for vinegar.

I have been using molasses, for small things when cold a small crock pot. have a big tank but it is frozen solid. Going to try citric acid in spring. One thing you need when derusting is a phosphoric acid  wash, your derusted part when rinsed will flash rust, a slosh for  a minute or 10 will leave a metal prep finish. A good source of phosphoric acid is Etch and Prep by Kleen Strip, can be found at many paints big box stores. You can use phosphoric acid to derust but it does remove metal over time! I learned the hard way.
