I'm reading claims from a guy who purports to have patented his miracle weld chipping hammer with attached flashlight.
He calls it Slagenator.
Can you check the Incoming bin and see if he's just blowing smoke?
The invention is the Horrible Fright chipper in his hand in the picture. He welded a pipe nipple in the handle and stuck a flashlight in the nipple.

Did not find anything, did not find a tm registration either....
I do know this fellow has hit every welding site on the net...
and I have to wonder, if he is a welder, how come he doesn't know what the spring on the handle is for?

That's a special shock absorbing handle Rusty.
I read his whole website and had a few laughs. Looks like he's getting OWNED on a couple of the welding sites by some old hands too.
Gotta say it would have been one hell of a product if he had put a strobing LED in the handle so you could find the damn chipper after you set it someplace.
Kind of wonder if he made it on ccompany time being he CLAIMS to be a welder for an elivator company. Sort of wonder what kind of weldor runs him too. Boy has enough leather on in the picture to buckle his knees. Must be an LA thing, I herd some guys out there are really into the leather thing.
If you go back about a week on SFT he was posting looking for advice how to make the welds look good on the contraption.

If tools were sold on the infomercials at 2:00 in the morning, that would be the type of tool you would see.

Unlike antique tools, sold by companies that are usually no longer in existance, this is a current product, sold by a company that exists, and has a reputation they can protect, legally, so I will restrain my otherwise snide remarks ;P

Rule #1, NEVER trust anything a man dressed in brand new welding leathers trying to claim he's a "welder" says.
Rule #2, unless you live in the same county as a dipstick in new welding leathers hawking a product, it's safe to snidely remark. If you live in a different state speak your mind, it's going to take him 15 years and $50,000 to get you into Federal Court.

I just want to see the osha guy when you tell him you are performing a job so dangerous that it requires pulling a daily hot permit, under conditions so poorly illuminated you have to work with a flashlight to see what you are doing ;P

Skipping over the OSHA issues, what would a manufacturer of LED flashlights have to say if you said you are going to sell his product to someone who was going to smack a weldment with it all day every day. There could be warranty issues.

Design's all wrong. He should be using a laser. Everyone else is.
Let's assume it's actually useful. Imagine this company's difficulty in making a profit, when every welder in the country can whip one up in ten minutes, having seen a picture.

The guy is a Union Elevator Installer in California who was laid off according to today's story.
He's increasing productivity for the company because he doesn't need to switch tools when he finishes chipping the weld and he can inspect for undercut. His Union Brothers love the idea. SURE THEY DO!
He also has to climb an extension ladder inside the dark shaft with the big heavy weldingcable over his shoulder. Evidently he slept through apprenticeship and missed Prusik 1.01 and handline. He also claims he has to wear fall arrest gear, AND hang on for dear life. Sounds like he stops at the bar on his way to work.
Mr Bullcrap is going to get himself smudged on the welding boards.
Now, if I can just find that laser pointer from the Dollar Store, I can invent and patent leather a precision guided chipper with a replaceable point. Maybe Rusty can hunt up a strobe for the handle so I can find the damn hammer in a dark silo when I drop it.

I've done my share of welding, but you know, I never did master shaking my head down to bring down the helmet.
Always have had to use my hand to position it correctly.

I really love the flashing strobe idea.
Put a "clapper" on it and you would sell millions in every industry there is!
Whatever it is you can't find? Is usually 18 inches away

I am sure he will sell some. I don't see it being a multi million dollar company. More power to him if he can make it work.

Always have had to use my hand to position it correctly.
That's because it's more of a "flick" than a "shake" :)

Chuck, you're lucky. You saved a fortune on chiropractors. Smart weldor sets the drag on the helmet so it falls when you tip the head forward. The term weldor's fracture actually exists in Chiropractic books describing the neck injury common to the trade.
Nola, being you're a kid, I'll make it real simple. That goober is full of CRAP! He claims to be a Union Elevator Mechanic, and if he was playing Mr Efficiency increaser on the job he'd have 4 flat tires every day till he learned to work the Union Brothers way. Also consider elevator shafts are very special places in terms of what can be done in them and by who. There is very little welding done inside of a shaft because it is a high risk location. Also note the brand new leathers he's posing in. No weldor worth his lunch bucket would pose in spanking new leathers and expect to be credible. The guy is getting beat down on Welding Web, and there ain't 20 weldors on that site I'd call mechanics. The more he defends the worse he gets hit.
Look at his site and he's advertising "hardened tip" which is a dangerous thing to have on a chipper because it increases eye injury potential, and "shock proof" spring handle. What the hell kind of shock is he expecting?
The construct of the hammer is compromised badly when the pipe nipple holding the light is welded in, and the light should be tight to the head, not back a couple inches. That head is going to fly when one of the 2 welds breaks, and it will.
Sad part is he ain't smart enough to know he's getting beat to death.
He ain't even smart enough to remember he was asking for advice on how to make the welds look acceptable on another board 2 weeks back.

Granted ime not a full time professional welder yet, I still do just find with a normal slag chipping hammer. In no means am I saying I like or would use the product.
I don't believe the efficiency of the product or anything he sais on his site.
I think if he can make it work somehow its good for him. Every company starts somewhere. In my mind his product and business philosophy needs to change, before he comes successful. He wont be getting any money from me thoe.
I am a member at welding web. I have learned a good amount an got some good tips from there. Some of the welders there are great, and some are less skilled. I have gotten a few good ides for basic projects as well. I think as any internet site you have to be cautious of what to believe. Garage gazette is the same way, some good some less skilled.
