Title: More gems from the Pickle Buckets
Post by: dimwittedmoose51 on January 02, 2014, 08:34:19 PM
The surprises just keep coming from Tom's stash of tools.  Got bull headed last night and de rusted everything left that was worth the effort.  Two finds worth photographing in addition to a couple of chrome Proto 5249s that will need some TLC.  Firs tis the ugliest ratchet I'm ever going to keep; a Chrome X Quality(Western Auto?) 1/2" Dr. rat that I've never seen before.  Some research found an old post on GG of a BOG Co. rat that looked just like it and some info on their marriage with Plomb.  This rat is not cherry by any means, but the BOG had some plating on it and a knurled handle.  This thing has crudely added parallel lines at the handle end and once I figured out that the two plugged up holes weren't oil holes, but rather female holes for a spanner or circlip pier to remove the drive plate.  I ended up soaking the head in MM Oil and that seemed to free it up.
The bucket also had a nicely cleaned up BE series C-man 1/2" speeder, and then this really weird tool with the 1/2" 12 pt. crow's foot end that looks like a glorified Pez dispenser.  It's apparently made way back for some sort of torque setting on a Cadillac, but not sure how hold.  This must be a first gen. click stop style torque wrench, and despite its rusty condition, it seems to work.  Not sure what the pre-set value is on it, but it will click.  Made by Richmont.  Stampings are a bit faint, but found one similar on ebay to compare notes on.

Saving the best for last, this double bit axe came from the same estate sale that I got the $10 Chinese gas generator(hell, the 3 gallons of gas in it sorta made that sale a no-brainer even though it didn't run) and the set of 4 Craftsman fiberglass handled body hammers,  but I only recently noticed the "fine print".  As double-bitted axes go, this doesn't really stand out, but looking closer I saw that it was a Collins, so that was worth the $2.  The handle is way too new for it to be  the original, especially since on the other side of the bit the letters WPA are stamped on it, placing it back in the early to mid 30's.  Not sure how collectible it is without the original handle, but I'm thinking that the head is more important than the handle.  They also had an Ames military issue folding shovel dated 1944 for another dollar.  There's no telling what that house had for collectible stuff that I had no clue on......

Back to replacing the gas tank on the Subaru  and the rusted out rear hydraulinc brake line while I have all that out.....  The high Monday up here will be -12F.  The wood stove will be working overtime for  the foreseeable future.  Only dropping to -20 tonight.

PS, I'm having picture troubles too.... send them later

You better go back and get the shovel!  For a buck it was the buy of the day.
