A patent granted to an individual and assigned to a company is offered for sale as part of a Bankruptcy estate.

When the Patent is sold, does the buyer re-register the patent and get a new number or does Patent office tracking end with the first grantee?

The number stays the same forever. Only the right to assign can be sold.
