Can anyone tell me what this tool is used for?
-
here is another angle
-
I think it used to be a can opener. The plated screws seem inconsistent with the rest of the tool...
-
I agree.
-
Did you know the can was invented before the opener? (~48 years) So how did they open cans? check out "How to open cans without tools" best I seen was to rub it on concrete to thin the rim & squeeze to open.

It looks like it may be a Stillman's patent saw set, that someone converted to an opener. Look on the shank just above the ferrule for the Stillman and the 1848 (I think) patent date; sometimes they are not there or are faint.
-
WV I thought that too at first but after I enlarged the pictures I don't believe it started life as a Stillman.
-
Undo the wing nut and turn the blade through 90 degrees - the two (new replacment) lock screws allow the distance between the handle and the blade to be adjusted... I reckon in this arrangement it will work as a saw set....
It certainly looks like a Stillman's type ...
This one has a similar triangular adjustable (single ended) blade

Yep, it's a saw set.

My Stillman saw set, with the star wheel for different thickness saw tooth configurations.
