Anyone seen this co before? I cold not find in Rathbones. Looks to me like it went to something in a machine shop. Lathe???

Looks like it might be a casting.
If so, probably not for a lathe or anything in a machine shop.

J. H. McLain of Canton OH is listed in National Builders , 1901, indexed under Furnaces.
MVWC entry says "J H McLain Co Canton, O (made feed mills, horse powers, jacks, sawing machines 1898 to 1922) "

The nickel-plated McLain wrenches came a lot shinier. And yes, these were made by the aforementioned furnace manufacturer. I remember seeing Weil-McLain furnaces many years ago
