Title: Utica Select-o-lock
Post by: rusty on August 11, 2014, 05:00:25 PM
The problem with gimmicks is when the other guy has one, you need one also.

This was Utica's answer to locking the thumb nut...

(Doesn't work well, the thin sheet metal lock gets stuck in the knurl so well you can't get it loose...)

Note sure what patent might apply, Utica had several other patented designs that also were 'select-o-lock'...

These have recently gotten my attention, to the point I now have a 4, 6 and 10 inch versions. Don't know if they made a 12 and bigger or not. I also have my eye on a 8 inch.

After seeing this one, and a few on the forum, and quite a few different strange patents, I find myself pondering a collection. So far tho, I only have this one.

Does 1 count as a collection?

Sadly, someone ground all the chrome off the head of this one, probably to erase user marks, It would have been a definite leave-on-the-table if not for the unusual lock thinggy. (I wanted to play with it and see how well it actually worked)

I think locking adjustables are now on my list tho....

I have used adjustables for nr 80 yrs and never felt  a need for a lock.   Odd balls tho survive in the best condition for collectors.   Chuck Garrett

Ressurecting this thread to answer the question.  Utica did make the a 12 inch version of the Select-o-lock adjustable wrench.

Did any other manufacturer make an adjustable wrench with the sheet metal lock? I have a 6" adjustable with a plastic handle and the lock, but I can't determine the manufacturer without cutting off the handle and I'd rather leave it intact.

Yes, there were other manufacturers, cannot think of them right off, would have to check my index cards.

I have one of those Crestolock 8" adjustables. They belong in collections rather than tool boxes! Hard to adjust and pinched my thumb. If it had been a success they would be everywhere.
