Is it not a gopher or mole trap?
-
A bit overkill for moles -- it would do the job on the woodchucks trying to invade the folks' (now vacant) farm house basement. Not sure it would be tough enough for a badger. ( sorry Wisconsinites )
-
think that is a mole trap too.
-
Just don't catch a skunk in it....

Yeah-the guy that gave it to me said he'd never managed to get a rat with it. I thought at the time a gopher was more likely, but they are not tooooo common around here, especially down in the City. Whatever it was meant for, the thing would have to arch it's back fairly hard onto the release mechanism to set it off. I just thought it was a cool old piece.

Mole trap, you stick it into the ground so when a ground mole tunnels under it the trap is triggered and the spikes drive down into the ground and kills the mole in his/her/it's tunnel. Kind of hit and miss but they work.

I will definitely be keeping my fingers away from that.
