Title: Stone facing hammer?
Post by: Edkat3 on November 08, 2014, 01:23:44 PM
Found this hammer in a junk shop today. Not sure what it is used for but I think it may be a stone facing hammer. Came with extra bits all different in size. Hammer and two of the bits are marked "Italy", one bit is marked France. Any idea?

I think you are right. I have several new hammers that are similar but are used to create different patterns on metal.

Yes, a stone mason's hammer, for flattening and texturing the surface of a stone - I have a couple with fixed faces (of different sizes) - the one like yours is still being made today - known as a bush hammer, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_hammer - sometimes known as a scabbling hammer, but this is a slightly different process...
