Title: S-K Visegrip's
Post by: mikeswrenches on March 13, 2015, 11:10:55 AM
This is the first of these I've seen.  They are 7 in. long as pictured.  I looked on the net and the 'wonderful' auction site but didn't come up with anything.

Anybody else run across a pair?  Or know when they were made.

That's a first for me, Mike.

That pair must have been from 1969 to 1971 as that is a Dresser-era logo and still shows a Chicago address. In 1968, it was still SK-Wayne, and by some time in 1971, the address had changed to Franklin Park...

I have Proto, P&C and Blackhawk marked Vise Grips. I may have others, but i remember those three for sure. I guess Peterson  Mfg. was more than happy to stamp others names on their tools. I only buy Peterson made V.G's. No Irwin made ones in my tool boxes. Two days ago i picked up a pair of Samson Lever Jaw Wrench pliers. kinda worn out, but i like the adjusting screw on them. Bullet shaped. I may put the adjusting screw on a pair of Vise Grips just to drive a future collector of Vise Grips crazy thinking he has found another version of them.

+1 on that.

I've also seen Vise-Grips branded for Master Mechanic, Wilde & New Britain.

Vise Grips have a distinctive feature that makes them easy to spot in a pile.  The upper jaw is held in place by that deep crimp and one rivet.  I forget how many tons of pressure that crimp is put on with but it is high.   That is one of their patented features, look at the foreign made tools, and you will see no crimp and two or three rivets in that area.   I have a pair stamped New Britain too.

Thanks for all the great information from everyone.

I must be living a sheltered life here in FL.  I've never seen any that had anything other than  Vise-grip marked on them.  Except for the Irwin stuff.

I have several pairs of Vise Grips that look like the upper jaw is also brazed or silver soldered on. Whatever it is, it was done at the factory not in Bubba's garage. If it were just rivited and crimped there would be a noticeable line between the two parts and i do not believe chrome would fill in and hide that gap. If they were brazed or silver soldered, that gap would be filled and the chrome would have full coverage where the two parts meet. As far as silver solder, i don't know if you can plate it.

Thus living up to your name.

I've never seen real Vise Grips stamped with any name except the original, either.  Interesting.

Sampson Lever Jaw pliers are just a knockoff of Vise Grips. I have seen many knockoff brands. Some good, some total junk.

I have a couple of s-k vice grips.  Only two s-k screwdrivers though.
