Title: cutter of some sort
Post by: rustcollector on July 10, 2015, 07:39:09 PM
OK, I give up, I enjoy researching stuff a lot. But I give up after 3 hours of searching on this one. Obviously a cutting device, but I don't know what it's supposed to cut. It is marked, with what I believe to be S ELLIOTT NEWTON MASS, which leads me to believe Sterling Elliott, but trying to find a list of just his patents turns out to be a chore, and he holds around 125 patents.

So, somebody out there please tell me what it is so I can sell it intelligently.

Had to edit...it is NEWTON MASS not Boston, my eyes were going buggy trying to read it. This pretty much confirms that it is a Sterling Elliot patent since Newton was his factory hometown.

No, small stock of some sort. About 1/2" material at best. I'm still looking myself too.

Looks more like a crimper, does it have a sharp edge to cut with?

Looks like a blade or groove former on one side?  Also, is there some material broken off where the round pin goes thru near the center?  It looks like there are rough edges on each side of that pin.

Groover would be more accurate than cutter. If you put a round 1/4" piece in there, the "blade would only go through about 1/2 of it. There are also a few old metal filings still left from somebody doing just that. Don't think there is any broken pieces on that pin, but may be worn down a ways.

I struck out on finding a patent. Sterling was very prolific. Found an early patent for making leather laces but your finding metal bits knocks out some kind of leather working tool.

does it look like it could premark a line on a small motor shaft to show where and how long to cut a keyway ??

clamp & slide it on the shaft ?

just my 2 cents added.

maybe a tubing cutter? is that barrel thing a roller? does the inside pin roll?

Pin doesn't move or roll.

Beginning to think it's more to snap something, not sure what though.

Elliott was into so much stuff that it's hard to go in any direction with it. Bikes, addressing machines, tires, etc....

Seems there are some Elliott museums out there, Going to list it at a stupid price and see if an Elliott expert will pipe in on it and inform me.

When I saw his patent for a cutting gage, I wondered if it was along those lines. I've since looked at all the patents that I found listed for him.... http://www.oldbike.eu/museum/bikes-1800s/1892-2/1891-elliott-hickory-safety-bicycle/  .....about 90% of the way down the page. I still don't see this tool. I am going to Donnelly's this week, going to take it and see if he can add any insight.

I once had a gizmo for redoing the tip end of pool cues where the ferrule goes, it had to be hand cranked around a stationary cue but had the same type cutter and shaving / truing sections. Maybe this does the same job by holding the tool stationary and turning the cue?

I just stumbled on a screw cutting device that is very similarly designed. Now I have a new avenue to go down on this thing since I still have it.

could it possibly be used on round stock in a lathe ??

You mentioned bicycle tools and now mention similarity to a screw cutting tool.  How about a bike spoke threader?
