Picked up this plane today, heavy chunk of metal in it.
Looks to have oriental characters, I figured I would take it home and hit with the wire wheel on the grinder to get a better view.
Cant get to grinder due to furniture infestation from yard sale left overs... Dang !
So, any idea if this is a cheap knock off or a quality piece?
The stamped wedge points to a knock off, but I am guessing.

It's a Japanese plane -- works on a pull stroke. Couldn't tell about the quality, but my impression is that most Japanese woodworking tools are of decent quality.

I have a plane like that (yes, asian), and it's one I use so much that it takes up prime real estate on my primary workbench. It can work on a push or pull stroke. I haven't really run across a bad or cheap one before.

That stamped piece is not uncommnon on decent Japanese planes, from what I understand - although I'm not a Japanese tool user, other than one pull saw that's quite handy for some cuts.
