Title: Hammer ID requested
Post by: bill300d on October 04, 2015, 12:21:16 PM
I picked this up a while back for a dollar and have been trying to ID it. Have you ever seen one like this? It has no identifying marks at all.

That was a dollar well spent.

It looks like a silversmith's planishing hammer. Coppersmith,  tinsmith, etc.

Would have had mirror finishes.

It's a raising hammer for sheet metal work.

It's a raising hammer for sheet metal work.

Not quite, raising hammers are wide one way and short the other, so that you van "raise" thr metal.  Planishing hammers usually have a flat face and a slightly domed face. They are used for smoothing out a form after working it.

I'll try to get mine out and take a couple of pictures.  I have plenty of both types, modern and vintage.

Thanks for education on raising and planishing hammers guys.  A couple of weeks ago while perusing a trade journal on google books I ran across an ad for a hammer that looked just like the one in my photos. I thought that I copied the page but now can't find it nor can i remember the name of the manufacturer.

WHAT?!??!! Is Papaws Wrench going 50 shades? S/M tools and equipment.  If the infamous Marquis was alive today he would be spinning in his grave!

There's more than one?!?  I've led a sheltered existence.  I usually end up asking my kids what these shady things mean.

(I'm sure someone is going to tell me that its not shady, rather shades. And that there's more than 4 dozen.)

You must have a good relationship with your kids if they're willing to tell you.

Yeah, they tell me more than I want to know.
