Got this one in a bunch of old tools.Still trying to figure out what it does.Any ideas? Not a nutcracker or a leather working tool;maybe a saw set?
-
Not so old - company formed by merger sometime in the 1970s has an online presence ( www.roperwhitney.com/store/shop/ ) looks like a lot of sheet metal tools, punches, etc & maybe you can find it there.

Well it is based on the Whitney jr hole punch set, but the lower arm is modified to "do something"
normal punch set will do holes fro 1/16 to 5/16. Now what exactly yours does?
I've also got a Parker/Kalon set that is the same basic set. (I don't have pics on this computer)

Looks like one of the 975 tools made to supposedly join steel studs and cut construction costs according to the salesman.
I have one someplace that's based on visegrips/
By my count, 973 of those tool concepts only worked for the salesman.

Sent an e-mail to the company;along with the photos;will see if I can get a reply.JMHO but it looks to be somewhat older than the 1970's. The old tool box it came out of was loaded with tools from the 1920's and 30's.

They have been around for ages, before the 70's.
It is a metal punch, for punching sheet metal. I have several.

Most Whitney punches I've seen are for punching holes in flat sheet metal. Yours looks like an attachment someone made to punch holes in U-channel. Just a SWAG.
-
I have whitney punches that punch 3/8" holes in 3/16" steel.
This onw looks lighter.

Chilly, Yours won't fit in your back pocket either.

That's only a #3. Move up to a 5 and hang it from an overhead track so you can blow 5/8 through 1/2 steel. Just remember to hang a safety curtain on the back end to take the velocity out of the slugs leaving the punch. If you have a helper pick the slugs up and set them aside in a coffee can ya just might be able to sell them on ePay as hole fillers/weldable.
When you sell enough hole fillers you can buy a hydraulic Whitney that will do 1" in 3/4 steel.
