Title: I need opinions please
Post by: girlwithtools on October 15, 2011, 08:01:30 PM
My isister and I had someone come over to look at our large black tool box including all the tools, he also found some electrition things to add in and I believe 2 more small tool boxes... he offered $2800. Here are the photos I have of what he is getting, thought?!

Unless every tool in there is marked Snap-on, Cornwell, Mac, or Wright, I think you would be hard pressed to part it all out and make that on those tools.

From your pictures, there looks to be a mix of many different brands in that box. Most of the value is in the box itself. I have no idea what one like it would cost, but probably in the 700-1000 range for the box. I don't shop Sears, so no idea what comparable box they have or a retail price.

Personally, if what your pictures show is all that is in there, I would sell it for the $2800. I really don't see that many high-end tools to be had.

Others may chime in, but that is my .02 worth of opinion.

Were I in your shoes, I'd take the CASH, hold the door, and smile.
I'd draw the line at helping him load though.
$2800- fir what I see in those pictures is decent money.

CASH only though, no checks, no dollar down and dollar when you catch me.

PS: Don't forget to write his licence plate number down and save it.

Been looking at the pics, and just went to the Sears site.  Figure a reseller would get 50% of new for that box.   The tools are a mix of new and some upwards of 50 years old, nothing wrong with that, just the dollar part.  Worked out of tool boxes for close to 40 years, so I would say that price is a good one.   If he brings cash, I'd say its a done deal.

My opinion is that if it isn't worth the trouble of setting things out where they can be seen, then you are selling a 'grab bag'. $2800 is good money for a grab bag.

Hers my two cents

2800 isnt a great deal, but yet not a bad deal. If you dont wana wait around to sell piece by piece ide accept 2800$ cash only

I agree that I would take the cash. Even if it were more name brand tools,in this economy folks aren't buying tools that are high priced.I see the same tools on Craigs List every week that aren't selling. It looks like all good tools. Both of you are making out on the deal.

Also added to that price is a hole saw kit, couple pairs of pliers, electrical meter, portable ban saw, electrical drill, drill bits and 3/4 drive socket... Does this change the $2800 offer or should it still stand?

Do you have the kinds of band saws so I can find out, I currently don't know any more details of this particular one.

Sorry, I should have asked, Who made it, ie Porter Cable, Milwaukee, etc...

(assuming it is US made, and reasonably large, worth half of the new price of 200-600$
(They have gotten a bit cheaper lately I see..)

On the other hand, if you don't know the condition of it, or if it works, it may be worth more as a pot sweetener in the tool deal ; P

Well my dad kept everything in working condition so I'm sure it does work. I guess we will have to look further into it. Any opinion on whether those extra items still make the deal worth it?

As Rusty said. they may be the things that keep the buyer from trying to haggle you down on the total. Throw them in if he balks at your price.

Based on what I saw in the initial pictures, you have a LONG way to go with this liquidation.  $2800 for the batch currently on the block, even including a portaband and holesaws which are generally throwaway items, you have a fair price.
You have the option of asking $3000- and one of three things will happen, your buyer may walk, or he may up.  He may also say $2500 or 2900.  For the sake of a couple hundred potential dollars you risk future sales.  The way you're selling generally brings the most dollars when buyers tell other buyers about the sale.  You tend to get a better quality buyer with cash, and less thieves.

When you go to Craigslist selling you attract thieves by the truckload in my experience.

Your first post stated "he Offered" if the guy is interested in the lot and that was his first offer then the first counter offer I would make would be $3,000.00. The next thing I would expect him to say is ok OR $2,900.00. You can always go back and accept his first offer. You can't just take the first offer unless he is a friend then it is a different story, friendship has its priviledges. You have to haggle it is part of the sale.
